Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), you will be warmly welcomed by your Pita Safaris representative and transferred to your comfortable midrange hotel in Nairobi. Spend the remainder of the day relaxing after your flight or, if time permits, enjoy an optional Nairobi excursion such as Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, or the Karen Blixen Museum before your unforgettable Kenya midrange safari begins. In the evening, meet your safari guide for a briefing and prepare for your journey into northern Kenya.
Day 2: Nairobi - Samburu National Reserve
After breakfast, depart Nairobi in your private 4×4 Safari Land Cruiser and journey north through the scenic landscapes of central Kenya toward the spectacular Samburu National Reserve. Enjoy views of changing landscapes, rural communities, farms, and the impressive Mount Kenya region as you transition from the highlands into the rugged and semi-arid scenery of northern Kenya.
Arrive at your midrange safari lodge or tented camp in time for lunch before heading out for your first exciting afternoon game drive. Explore Samburu's distinctive wilderness in search of elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, crocodiles, and the unique northern species that make this reserve so special. Keep your camera ready for possible sightings of the famous Samburu Special Five.
Day 3: Full Day Samburu National Reserve
Spend a full day exploring the spectacular Samburu National Reserve on morning and afternoon game drives accompanied by your professional safari guide. This is one of the highlights of your Kenya wildlife safari, offering excellent opportunities to encounter species rarely seen in the southern safari destinations.
Search for the legendary Samburu Special Five: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, and Beisa oryx. Along the Ewaso Ng'iro River, you may encounter elephants coming to drink, while lions rest beneath acacia trees and leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, hippos, and crocodiles inhabit the surrounding wilderness.
Enjoy lunch at your accommodation or in a suitable safari setting before continuing your afternoon wildlife adventure. The dramatic landscapes, distinctive wildlife, and warm golden light of Samburu create excellent opportunities for photography.
Day 4: Samburu - Ol Pejeta Conservancy
After breakfast, depart Samburu and travel south toward Ol Pejeta Conservancy, one of Kenya's leading wildlife conservation areas. Upon arrival, check into your comfortable midrange lodge or tented camp and enjoy lunch before heading out for an afternoon wildlife experience.
Ol Pejeta is particularly renowned for its successful rhino conservation programme and provides opportunities to see both black and white rhinos. The conservancy is also home to lions, elephants, buffaloes, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, hartebeests, and many other wildlife species.
Depending on opening hours, availability, and the selected activity, you can also visit the Chimpanzee Sanctuary, where rescued chimpanzees are protected and cared for in a secure environment.
Your afternoon game drive provides an exceptional opportunity to combine wildlife viewing with an appreciation of Kenya's important conservation efforts while enjoying the beautiful landscapes of the Laikipia region.
Day 5: Ol Pejeta - Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast, leave Ol Pejeta and continue south toward the spectacular Great Rift Valley and Lake Nakuru National Park. Enjoy a scenic drive through the central Kenyan highlands before arriving at your comfortable midrange accommodation for lunch.
In the afternoon, embark on a game drive through Lake Nakuru's diverse habitats. Search for black and white rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, waterbucks, lions, leopards, and other wildlife. Depending on seasonal and lake conditions, you may also encounter flamingos, pelicans, and numerous other waterbirds.
The combination of acacia woodlands, open grasslands, rocky viewpoints, and lakeshore habitats makes Lake Nakuru a rewarding stop on this 8 Day Kenya midrange safari.
Day 6: Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast, depart Lake Nakuru and travel through the breathtaking Great Rift Valley toward the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. The journey takes you through scenic countryside, rural communities, rolling hills, and changing landscapes before reaching the vast savannah plains of the Mara ecosystem.
Arrive at your midrange safari lodge or tented camp for lunch before setting out on your first afternoon game drive in the Masai Mara. Search for the legendary Big Five—lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard and rhino—alongside cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hyenas, hippos, and abundant birdlife.
As afternoon turns toward evening, watch the golden African light illuminate the Mara's endless grasslands before returning to your accommodation for dinner and relaxation.
Day 7: Full Day Masai Mara National Reserve
Spend a full day exploring the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve with morning and afternoon private game drives accompanied by your experienced professional safari guide. This is the major Big Five highlight of your Kenya midrange safari from Nairobi.
Explore the open savannah in search of lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and other wildlife while watching for cheetahs, hyenas, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, crocodiles, and numerous bird species.
During the Great Wildebeest Migration season from approximately July to October, you may witness enormous herds moving through the Mara ecosystem, with dramatic river crossings occurring at certain times and locations. Wildlife sightings are naturally unpredictable, but the Masai Mara offers outstanding opportunities throughout the year.
Enjoy lunch at your accommodation or, where appropriate and permitted, a picnic lunch during your game-drive adventure. Optional experiences can include a traditional Maasai cultural village visit or other locally arranged activities before returning to your midrange lodge or tented camp for dinner.
Day 8: Masai Mara - Nairobi / Departure
Wake early for your final morning game drive in the Masai Mara, when cooler temperatures and softer morning light create excellent conditions for wildlife viewing and photography. Search for lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, antelopes, and other wildlife before leaving the reserve.
After breakfast, begin your scenic return journey to Nairobi. Travel through the Great Rift Valley and Kenya's countryside while reflecting on your incredible safari through Samburu, Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru and the Masai Mara.
Arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon for drop-off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for your onward flight, or at your Nairobi hotel if you have arranged an additional night.

Practical advice to help you prepare for a smooth and rewarding safari
- Best time: July–October for the Great Wildebeest Migration in the Masai Mara, excellent wildlife viewing, and generally dry safari conditions.
- Samburu: Pack lightweight, breathable clothing, a hat, sunscreen, and comfortable walking shoes because northern Kenya can be warm during the day.
- Masai Mara: July–October is particularly popular, so booking early is recommended for the best selection of midrange safari lodges and tented camps.
- Lake Nakuru: Bring binoculars and a camera for rhinos, Rothschild's giraffes, flamingos, waterbirds, and other wildlife.
- Ol Pejeta: Allow time to appreciate the conservancy's important rhino and chimpanzee conservation programmes alongside your game drives.
- Photography: Carry a camera with extra batteries, memory cards, and a suitable telephoto lens if available.
- Early mornings: Bring a warm jacket or fleece for early game drives, especially around Ol Pejeta and Lake Nakuru where temperatures can be cooler.
- Accommodation: Midrange lodges and tented camps offer an excellent balance between comfort, location, service, and safari value without the higher cost of luxury properties.
- Travel light: Soft-sided luggage is recommended for easier storage in safari vehicles and accommodation transfers.
- Book ahead: Early reservations can help secure preferred midrange accommodation, especially during July–October and festive travel periods.
