Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Nairobi
Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), you will be warmly welcomed by our Pita Safaris representative and transferred to your comfortable budget hotel in Nairobi. Spend the remainder of the day relaxing after your flight or, if time permits, enjoy optional excursions such as Nairobi National Park, the Giraffe Centre, the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, or the Karen Blixen Museum before your exciting Kenya budget safari begins.
This relaxed first day gives you time to recover from your journey while preparing for an unforgettable wildlife adventure through some of Kenya's most remarkable destinations.
Day 2: Nairobi - Aberdare National Park
After breakfast, depart Nairobi and travel into the cool, scenic central highlands towards Aberdare National Park, a beautiful mountain ecosystem characterized by dense forests, waterfalls, moorlands, bamboo zones, and rich wildlife habitats. The journey offers changing landscapes as you leave Nairobi behind and ascend into the Aberdare ranges.
Upon arrival, check into your budget-friendly forest lodge or tree lodge. Depending on your selected accommodation and arrival time, enjoy lodge-based wildlife viewing or relax while surrounded by the peaceful sounds of the forest.
Aberdare is known for forest elephants, buffaloes, bushbucks, waterbucks, monkeys, warthogs, and other woodland species, while leopard sightings are possible but naturally elusive.
Day 3: Aberdare - Samburu National Reserve
After breakfast, depart the Aberdare highlands and travel north towards the dramatic semi-arid landscapes of Samburu National Reserve. The scenery changes dramatically as you journey through central Kenya towards the rugged northern frontier, with dry plains, rocky hills, acacia trees, and the Ewaso Ng'iro River forming the backdrop.
Arrive at your budget safari lodge or tented camp for lunch before enjoying an afternoon game drive. Begin exploring Samburu's unique ecosystem in search of elephants, lions, leopards, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and other wildlife.
Keep your eyes open for some of northern Kenya's most distinctive species, including reticulated giraffes and Grevy's zebras.
Day 4: Full Day Samburu National Reserve
Spend a full day exploring the spectacular Samburu National Reserve on morning and afternoon game drives accompanied by your professional English-speaking safari guide.
This is one of the highlights of your Kenya budget safari, offering an opportunity to encounter several species rarely seen in Kenya's southern safari destinations.
Search for the famous Samburu Special Five: Grevy's zebra, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, Somali ostrich, and Beisa oryx.
The reserve also supports elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, hippos, crocodiles, warthogs, and numerous bird species.
Enjoy a picnic lunch in the reserve or return to your lodge for lunch before continuing your afternoon wildlife adventure. An optional Samburu cultural experience can also be arranged, providing an opportunity to learn about local traditions, lifestyles, music, and community heritage.
Day 5: Samburu - Ol Pejeta Conservancy
After breakfast, leave Samburu and travel south towards Ol Pejeta Conservancy, one of Kenya's leading wildlife conservation areas.
Ol Pejeta is particularly renowned for its successful rhino conservation efforts and provides an excellent opportunity to see both black and white rhinos in their natural environment.
After arrival and lunch, enjoy an afternoon game drive through the conservancy. Search for rhinos, elephants, lions, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, and other wildlife while learning about the importance of habitat protection and endangered-species conservation.
Depending on your selected package and availability, you may also visit the Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary, a conservation facility providing a protected home for rescued chimpanzees.
Day 6: Ol Pejeta - Lake Nakuru National Park
After breakfast, depart Ol Pejeta and descend towards the spectacular Great Rift Valley, continuing to Lake Nakuru National Park. The journey offers beautiful views of Kenya's highland landscapes before reaching the famous Rift Valley lake.
After lunch, enjoy an afternoon game drive in this wildlife-rich national park.
Lake Nakuru is renowned for its important black and white rhino populations, Rothschild's giraffes, buffaloes, waterbucks, zebras, lions, leopards, and abundant birdlife.
Depending on water levels and seasonal conditions, the lake may also attract flamingos and other waterbirds, creating excellent opportunities for wildlife and landscape photography.
Day 7: Lake Nakuru - Masai Mara National Reserve
After breakfast, depart Lake Nakuru and continue through the spectacular Great Rift Valley towards the legendary Masai Mara National Reserve, one of Africa's most celebrated wildlife destinations.
Enjoy scenic views along the journey before arriving at your budget safari lodge or tented camp. After lunch, set out on your first Masai Mara game drive, exploring the expansive savannah plains in search of lions, elephants, buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, cheetahs, hyenas, antelopes, and other wildlife.
The Masai Mara is also famous for the Great Wildebeest Migration, generally associated with the July–October period, when vast herds of wildebeest and zebra move through the Mara ecosystem.
Day 8: Full Day Masai Mara National Reserve
Spend a full day exploring the spectacular Masai Mara National Reserve on morning and afternoon game drives with your professional safari guide.
This is your main Big Five safari day, offering excellent opportunities to search for lions, elephants, buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos while also observing cheetahs, hyenas, hippos, crocodiles, giraffes, zebras, wildebeests, and numerous bird species.
Enjoy a picnic lunch in the reserve before continuing your afternoon wildlife adventure across the open grasslands. During the migration season, you may witness huge wildebeest and zebra herds moving through the Mara ecosystem, although sightings and river crossings are naturally seasonal.
Optional experiences include an early morning Hot Air Balloon Safari followed by a bush breakfast or a visit to a traditional Maasai cultural village.
Day 9: Masai Mara - Nairobi/Departure
Wake early for your final game drive in the Masai Mara, when the morning light creates excellent conditions for wildlife photography and predators are often active.
Search for any last sightings of lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, or other wildlife before returning to your lodge for breakfast.
After breakfast, check out and begin your scenic journey back to Nairobi through the Great Rift Valley. Enjoy the changing landscapes as you travel from the Mara's savannah plains towards Kenya's capital.
Arrive in Nairobi in the afternoon for drop-off at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) for your onward flight, or at your Nairobi hotel if you are extending your stay.
